Bands earn Superior Ratings at Festival!

Congratulations to both the Junior High and High School bands for their performances at the North Central Washington Band festivals in March.  In the first appearances at these festivals by Pateros bands since the ‘90s, each group was awarded a rating of Superior (High School earning a I-, and Junior High earning a I.)  A Superior rating is what bands practice and strive for, and both groups have certainly done both over the past year.  Congratulations to both the Junior High and High School Bands!

Bands participate in Okanogan Valley Music Festivals

These two festivals combined members of bands from Pateros, Tonasket, Liberty Bell, Bridgeport, Omak, Okanogan, and Oroville, for a day of rehearsal and then a performance that night.  Guest directors Dr. Patrick Winters and Mr. Devin Otto of Eastern Washington University led rehearsals in Oroville for the High School Band, and at Liberty Bell for the Junior High Band.  The bands combined to make performing groups of over 100 players under the direction of superb guest conductors.  The concerts were an amazing demonstration of hard work and talent from students throughout Okanogan County.

We’ve acquired a choir!

Nine students wowed the audience at the March 11th concert with their first performance as a choir, having only begun rehearsals in a class that began at the end of January.  The choir, made up of students from grades 7-12, sang festival-quality songs such as “Cantar” and “the Wind”, and ended their show with the famous rock-and-roll tune “Twist and Shout”.  The choir is now hard at work rehearsing for their second and final performance of the year at the Pateros Band and Choir concert on Tuesday, May 13th at 7:00.

Pateros Students to Seattle

Twenty-seven students from Pateros High School and Middle School journeyed to Seattle on an overnight cultural field trip made possible by our Pateros School Board and the Methow Arts Alliance. Students and chaperones braved a snowy ride over Snoqualmie Pass to arrive in time to dress and attend an evening Seattle Opera performance of Mozart's last comic opera, "Cosi fan Tutte" (Thus They All Do"). The production and staging were set in a modern day Seattle and consequently, in addition to the beautiful singing, there was sidesplitting hilarious theatre that was enjoyed by all of our students. We were also treated to the magnificent architecture and decor of the new home of Seattle Opera, the McCaw Opera House. A sleep over at the Bush School was followed by breakfast on Capital Hill and a visit to The Seattle Asian Art Museum and Volunteer Part Conservatory (indoor gardens). Our students viewed exhibits of Japanese calligraphy and Buddhist stone reliefs and artifacts, in addition to the unique floral displays at the conservatory. The gift shop at the conservatory was a hit. Our sincere thanks to the Pateros School Board and the Methow Arts Alliance for making this educational experience possible.
